Golfer close to pace
NZPA-Reuter Sutton, England Peter Hamblett, of New Zealand, was five shots off the lead after the first round of the Lawrence Battey international golf classic in Sutton yesterday. Sam Torrance, of Scotland, defied pain from a badly gashed left shoulder — an injury suffered when he ducked into a heavy handrail as he crossed to the eleventh tee — to shoot a four-under par 68 for a one-stroke lead.
