A more comprehensive conservation code for forestry is promised by the Social Credit Party. All remnant virgin native forests in the North Island would be protected from logging, along with substantial tracts of South Island forests, including Maruia, Paparoa, Ohinetamatea, Ohinemaka, and Paringa. A 10-year moratorium on logging at South Okarito and Waikukupa would be imposed. This would be followed by wilderness and reserve zoning if, in the interim, regional development plans had secured sufficient employment in ail West Coast communities. The National Parks and Reserves Authority recommendation for the creation of a Punakaiki National Park would be supported by Social Credit. An offer would be made to the Waitutu Maori Incorporation to preseve Waitutu forest in Western Southland leading to the setting up of an environmental zone.
