N.Z. women draw match
NZPA special correspondent London
The New Zealand women’s cricket team was extended for the first time yesterday when held to a draw by Surrey in the third match of its tour of England. New Zealand was dismissed for 150 and, in reply, Surrey was 123 for eight. The match was not played as a limited-over fixture so honours were shared.
New Zealand struggled against a Surrey attack which was not expected to
hold too many terrors. It took 73.3 overs to make 150 with the lower order pulling the Kiwis through from a potentially embarrassing 46 for five.
Karen Plummer, with a stylish 32, started the revival in partnership with Sue Rattray, and then Elizabeth Signal chimed in with a bright 31. Surrey’s international openers, Jeanette Brittin and Chris Watmough, took 20 off the first four overs, but the run-rate slowed later.
New Zealand only got on
top when the captain, Debbie Hockley, decided to buy wickets with the spin of Rattray and the mediumpace of Jeanette Dunning.
These tactics nearly succeeded as Surrey continued the run chase. However, the shutters were put up with two overs to go with Surrey taking just 44 overs to score 123.
Scores: New Zealand 150 (D. Caird 21, Plummer 32, Signal 31) drew with Surrey 123/8 (Brittin 35, G. Davies 26, P. Lovell 30; Rattray 4/25, Dunning 2/21).
