Hadlee’s valuable innings

NZPA-Reuter London An unbeaten 45 by the New Zealand all-rounder, Richard Hadlee, steered Nottinghamshire to 223 for six against Lancashire in a rain-affected Benson and Hedges one-day 55 overs cricket semi-final at Headingley yesterday.

Lancashire had reached 41 without loss in 12.2 overs before rain ended play. The match will end today.

In the other semi-final, a thrilling run chase by the Yorkshire batsmen, Martin, Moxon, Kevin Sharp and the captain, David Bairstow, just failed to overhaul the Warwickshire total of 276.

Yorkshire made a spirited attempt to qualify for only its second final since the competition began in 1972, but failed by just three runs.

Alvin Kallicharran scored

a sparkling 85 for Warwickshire and was well backed by the former test opener, Dennis Amiss, with 44, and the wicket-keeper, Geoff Humpage, with an unbeaten 58.

A prospective test opener, Moxon, led the Yorkshire reply with a stylish 50 and Sharp scored 83. But when Bairstow was caughtiafter a typically whirlwind 39 the task proved beyond it.
