Diplomatic relations

Sir,—lf Labour is elected, Mr Lange threatens closing of the South African Consulate. Yet a Labour government farsightedly first recognised China. If Mr Lange was in power would he bid the French ambassador “Au revoir” immediately, following the recent Mururoa bomb test by France, and of course cancel next Saturday’s so popular rugby test against France? Sir Robert Muldoon sent both Russian and Argentine Ambassadors packing. Does “slamming” embassy doors really achieve much? We are all part of one shrinking world, and must “take in each other’s washing” to economically survive. Banning communications stifles information. It makes people curious, especially swinging voters. My South African neighbour tells me there is tremendous interest in South Africa and good will from his “Kiwi” associates. Where does morality begin and end? — Yours, etc.,

JOHN LESLIE. June 20, 1984.
