Invitation to barbarism
Sir,—Your editorial under this heading on June 18 was timely, thought-provoking, and somewhat disturbing. You are right in stating that part of the reason for the increase in criminal violence may well be a public acceptance of violence as a norm. One obvious reason for this is the hardening effect of a regular diet of raw violence in films, television, .and video. Impressionable young minds, in particular, become conditioned to such behaviour. The police have reported the alarming increase in youthful offenders. You rightly state that we have a solemn responsibility to uphold law and order. Have we not also a responsibility to resist the production and distribution of degenerate material? — Yours, etc.,
H. G. ORAM. June 20, 1984.
