Endangered reserves

Sir, — The fire at the Armstrong Reserve on Banks Peninsula shows us once again just how vulnerable many of the country’s ecologically important areas are. It is not enough to have just one small stand of cedars. In a similar way, quite small natural or man-made disasters could wipe out other small or unique reserves of scientific or scenic value. We need large reserves and plenty of them, to protect New Zealand’s natural values. Congratulations to the people who saved the Armstrong Reserve from total destruction. — Vniirc pfc ’MICHAEL DE HAMEL, Dunedin. June 18, 1984.
