Soviet sub. trawled

NZPA-AP Oslo A Soviet submarine became entangled in the trawl of a Norwegian fishing boat yesterday but disentangled itself after a three-hour struggle and steamed away.

Onar Gudmundsen, skipper of the 82-ton trawler Bentin, said that he had called the Norwegian Coast Guard after the submerged submarine began dragging his boat backwards. The submarine surfaced soon after the Coast Guard vessel Lafjord arrived.

The Royal Norwegian Navy said that the incident had occurred about 50 nautical miles west of Karmoey Island, near Stavenger, in western Norway. The location is in international waters but within Norway’s claimed 200-mile economic zone in the North Sea.

The deisel-powered Whis-key-class submarine appeared to be undamaged in photos released by the Navy. “Aftenposten,” an Oslo newspaper, reported that the Lafjord had offered help, but the Soviet vessel had rejected the offer.
