Medical student fined for cannabis

PA Wellington Cannabis use was “quite widespread” among medical students, a barrister, Mr M. A. Bungay, told the District Court at Wellington yesterday. Seamus Vincent McNulty, aged 22, a fourth year medical student, was appearing before Judge M. F. Hobbs for sentence having pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and selling it.

The Judge said that in view of Mr Bungay’s remarks he could “only express both surprise and concern that the future guard-

ians of the nation’s health should be so naive.” McNulty was fined $2OO and was ordered to do 150 hours community service. Mr Bungay said McNulty was described as a brilliant student who had had a sheltered upbringing. The element of profit appeared absent in the case of McNulty selling the small amount of cannabis involved in this case, Mr Bungay said. The Judge said that McNulty had sold a relatively small amount — only 48.3 grammes of cannabis — to an undercover constable.
