Labour ‘helped by snap poll’
PA Wellington The snap election had in some ways helped the Labour Party organisation prepare for the poll, said the party’s president, Mr Jim Anderton, yesterday. “The response from the public and the interest that has been created has probably made the snap election better in organisational terms than a longer period,” he said at a press conference.
Momentum and interest usually had to be sustained over a much longer period. “People can see if you are asking for an enormous commitment for just four
weeks that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
“They are prepared to make enormous sacrifices. People can just take leave which is owing to them ...
and actually get out there and work whereas normally they would have to space their effort over a much longer period. So you are able to get through an enormous amount of work.”
A particular problem had been canvassing marginal seats, with transient voters, which the party had left until last.
Labour Party workers had reported up to 1500 enrolments in some electorate during the week-end.
