Rethink plea to Mr Quigley

PA Palmerston North

The member for Palmerston North, Mr Trevor de Cleene, wants Mr Derek Quigley to reconsider his decision not to stand for Parliament.

In a telegram to Mr Quigley, Mr de Cleene said, “Whatever our differences, the country must be served by able people. You are one of those people, and many of your persuasion look to you as a future leader.

“I can understand your frustration with the Prime Minister and I share it. “But if the children are to have a New Zealand as you and I knew it, we must fight for them together, in sptie of the fact that you are National and I Labour.” Mr de Cleene said yesterday that he had worked with Mr Quigley on the Commerce and Energy Select Committee, and had a high regard for his ability and dedication.
