Sir David ‘acted correctly’

PA Wellington The Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Palmer, said last evening that the Gover-nor-General, Sir David Beattie, had acted entirely correctly at all times over the snap election and dissolution of Parliament.

“He is obliged to accept advice to dissolve the House in the circumstances that advice was put to him,” Mr Palmer said, in a statement.

He was “appalled” at an NZPA report of a speech he had made in Dunedin.

The report quoted Mr Palmer as saying that the vice-Regal statement on the reason for the snap election would not withstand analysis.

His speech notes said, “The vice-Regal statement indicates that the reasoning based on the absence of a majority in the House will not withstand analysis.”
