Juniors perform well in table tennis
Canterbury junior table tennis players figured prominently in the South Island championships at Blenheim last week-end.
In the strong under-18 boys’ grade. Grant McCarroll lost 25-27 in the second game of his semi-final against the eventual winner, Tony Radford, a national representative from North Shore.
Karl Entwhistle also fared well before losing to the top seed and runner-up, Robert Kerr, of Wellington, 22-24, 2123. Steven Lockhart upset the third seed, David Kilmister (Manawatu), and took a national reserve, Sean Ryan (Auckland), to three games before being eliminated. Results of finals involving Canterbury players were:— Under 21. — Boys’ singles: T. Radford (North Shore) beat L. White, 21-14, 21-15. Under 18. — Boys’ doubles: Radford and S. Ryan (Auckland), beat S. Lockhart and M. Lockhart, 21-18, 21-5. Mixed doubles: G. McCarroll and Miss S. Mayes (Nelson), beat A. Wolloner (North Shore), and Miss C. Cearns (Auckland), 2115, 17-21, 22-20. Under 16. — Boys’ singles: K. Entwhistle beat M. McCleary (Hutt Valley), 21-17, 23-21. Boys’ doubles: Entwhistle and B. Lockhart beat McCleary and D. Babor (Hutt Valley), 19-21, 21-13, 21-18.
Under 14. — Boys’ doubles: C. Sparrow (Otago) and B. Lockhart beat R. Chung (Wellington) and B. Sparrow
