Table tennis rep. retires
PA Auckland Richard Lee, a national table tennis representative for 14 years, announced this week that he would retire from all competition. “At this stage I am giving up for the remainder of the season, but it is almost certain to be a permanent retirement,” said the 29 year old. Lee, who first gained New Zealand honours as a 15 yearold, won three national men’s singles titles and three national mixed doubles titles.
“Every trip as a national team member means paying $lOOO towards the fares, then there are the personal expenses and loss of wages to consider,” said Lee. “I think we do it only because we love the game.” He said players should not be called on to carry the burden. “Administrators should be doing more in the .fund-raising so that players can concentrate on their play and improving their skills.”
