Most food poisoning at home

Most of the 15 people who suffered from food poisoning last week had dined at home, said the Christchurch deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr M. A. Brieseman.

There was a lot of gastroenteritis around, and it could be spread by people with it preparing food for others, said Dr Brieseman. People got excited about food poisoning from commercial eating places but did not realise that most occurred at home, he said. Most of last week’s sufferers were from a few families. Two cases of malaria were also reported to the department last week. Travellers needed to remember that malaria still existed overseas, and they should still take necessary precautions, said Dr Brieseman.
