Budget draft details disclosed
PA Auckland The draft of the 1984 Budget, now shelved because of the snap election, provided for increases in health and welfare spending of more than the expected 5 per cent inflation rate, said the National candidate for Papatoetoe, Mr Peter O’Brien, on Monday evening.
He told an election meeting at Manurewa that he saw the Budget at a candidates’ conference in Wellington on Sunday. The “bottom line” deficit was less than the $2.5 billion suggested by the Labour finance spokesman, Mr Roger Douglas. Mr O'Brien said he would not say what the projected deficit was, however, “in deference to the Prime Minister.”
