Women’s cricket win

PA New Zealand edged out Middlesex on a run countback to record the second win of its women’s cricket tour of England yesterday. On a day punctuated by thunder, lightning and rain, Middlesex, batting first, made just 49 in 37 overs, and New Zealand replied with 28 for two, in what was scheduled to be a 55-over match. New Zealand was seven runs behind the Middlesex run-rate after 17 overs, with the rain getting heavier and the home side and umpires

keen to leave the field. But the captain, Debbie Hockley, and Nicki Turner stood firm long enough to score eight in the next two overs and when play was finally abandoned New Zealand had 28 in reply to Middlesex’s 25 at the same stage of its innings. The Middlesex batting had crumbled in the face of keen New Zealand bowling and fielding. A part-time bowler, Jeanette Dunning, had her best first-class figures of six for 13 from 10 overs and Sue Brown took three for three.
