New medley mark
NZPA-AP Toronto Alex Baumann, of Ontario, set a world record of 4min 17.53 s for the 400 m individual medley during a qualifying heat at the Canadian Olympic swimming
trials yesterday. Baumann, aged 20, who also holds the world record for the 200 m individual medley, shattered the previous best of 4:19.61 set three weeks ago by Jens-Peter Berndt, of East Germany.
