Dunes area to be protected

Building on the recreational development zone created on the New Brighton foreshore will not be allowed to interfere with existing sand dunes, according to the Town Clerk of Christchurch Mr John Gray. Mr Gray said that a building that included educational, recreational, and entertainment facilities had been designed for the area, opposite the eastern end of New Brighton shopping area.

The design had won a design contest for a building similar to a new pier. Proposals for a development area had been the subject of public discussion and a town-planning hearing had been held on May 22. The decision from that hearing was still awaited. Mr Gray acknowledged the importance of the sand dunes in protecting the coastline and said planning

would take into account effects on the dunes so that no ill-effects of erosion or instability would occur.

Mr Gray was answering the concerns of a Sumner resident. Mr B. R. Hansen.
