Embassy closed as staff strike

in Wellington Israel’s Embassy in Wellington ’was closed yesterday because staff were on strike. They were not answering the telephone or. receiving visitors as part of a worldwide action organised by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The protest is thought to be about staffing levels, wages, and pensions but. because the embassy was incommunicado this could not be confirmed.
A spokesman for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ms Evelyn Gees, said that the strike might continue to Friday.
The action took the New Zealand Ministry bysurprise. The first it knew of it was when someone telephoned the embassyafter going there and finding the doors closed.
