Strike vote reaffirmed

About 250 workers at five Skellerup rubber factories in Christchurch met yesterday and decided to continue to strike until they meet again on June 25.

Those on strike include

rubber workers, stationary engine drivers, cleaners, and drivers. With footwear workers they have been on strike since Friday in protest against the company’s policy on rehiring. Footwear workers returned to work yesterday. Members of the Engineers’ Union and the Clerical Workers’ Union are not involved in the dispute. The factories where

workers are on strike are Empire Rubber, Rotocure, Skellerup Footwear, Superfoam, and the Skellerup clothing division. Clothing workers at the company’s clothing factory in Papanui are so far not involved.

A spokesman for the combined unions, Mr Roger Brott, said that the company had told him that the parties were “too far apart” for formal talks to be of any use.
