Medal hopes shattered
PA Auckland Youths wielding iron bars shattered "Mr New Zealand’s” jaw — and his dreams of bringing home a gold medal from the South Pacific bodybuilding championships in Sydney. The 76kg strongman, Mr Nick Stewart, was sitting in his car outside an Auckland nightclub when he was attacked soon after 1 a m. on Sunday. Mr Paul Richards, who manages the fitness centre where the champion trains, said Mr Stewart had earlier broken up a disturbance inside the club.
The attack left the bodybuilder. aged 26. with a broken jaw and other severe facial injuries. He was taken to Green Lane Hospital and later transferred to Middlemore for surgery yesterday. The president of the Bodybuilders' Federation. Mr Graham Fong, said his organisation had selected Mr Stewart to represent New Zealand in Svdnev on July 7. “He is one of our top competitors and he was in good shape,” Mr Fong said. “It is a real disappointment to the federation and to all bodybuilders."
