Orienteers seek titles
A former member of the British orienteering squad, Peter Haines, of Dunedin, is favoured to win the M2l A and B grade event at the South Island orienteering individual B grade event at the South Island orienteering individual championships at Eskvale, Amberley, on Saturday. In the equivalent women’s section, Eileen Frith, of the organising Christchurch club, Peninsula and Plains, is expected to fight out the finish with Katie Fettes, of the Auckland Northwest Club. Haines, who has been in New Zealand for about two years, should receive his
strongest opposition from two former title-holders. Graham Frith and Graham Boniface, both of Christchurch. The runners in the M2l A and B and the W2l A and B grades — the toughest of the 19 sections — are expected to be on the course for about 90 minutes. The course is of rolling hill and farmland countrv.
About 120 competitors have entered. including runners from two Auckland clubs, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. The individual championships will be decided on Saturday and the relays will be held next day at the Burwood Bottle Lake plantation.
