Challenge for Coe
NZPA-Reuter England The in-form middle distance athlete. Peter Elliott, and the former world re-cord-holder. Sebastian Coe, are set to contest the last 1500 m spot in Britain's team for the Los Angeles Olympics. Elliott, like Coe. is already in the Olympic team for the 800 m. but both are anxious to double up in the 1500 m.
But only one of them can. Both the’ world champion. Steve Cram, and the world record-holder, Steve Ovett, have already been preselected in the longer event and there is only one re-
maining spot. The Elliott-Coe showdown will come at the British championships late r this month and Coe will need a convincing victory to have a chance of retaining the Olympic title he took in Moscow in 1980. Elliott won his 800 m place with ■ win in Imin 45.72 s at t-vstal Palace earlier this week and then announced ms intention to run in two events in Los Angeles.
’’Obviously the 800 m is still my main event, but I am going for the final 1500 m place because I have always planned to double uo. ” he said.
