Another sourpuss

By

RONNE BLANDFORD

in London

Every soap opera needs a sourpuss: Since the death of Albert Tatlock. the part of "Coronation Street's" grumpy old soldier looks like being taken over by Percy Sugden, who is in charge of the Communitv Hall.

Percy is played by Bill Waddington, who says he fits the part perfectly because he is never happy unless he is ordering other people about. He started his broadcasting career during World War II when he joined The Blue Pencils, the first concert party recruited from members of the forces.

He said: "From there I went into Stars in Battledress and became the Army’s top comedian."

After the war, Waddington toured Britain in music hall and variety. He shared the stage with stars like Dorothy Lamour. Frankie Laine, Sophie Tucker and Lena Horne. One of his four daughters. Barbara, has already appeared in “Coronation Street" as the daughter of one of Annie Walker's rival pub owners.
