Factory farming

Animal behaviour is the topic for discussion in “The Practical World,” on the radio National programme at 10.10 tonight. Over the last few years animal farming has become more and more intensive, culminating in what is now called “factory farming.” In this system hens, cows and pigs are caged up for the whole of their lives. There is evidence that this type of farming can cause a discontentment in animals that may well lead to serious harmful effects such as aggressive behaviour, licking and sucking problems. Research is now being carried out at Babraham, near Cambridge, into the behaviour of animals in natural surroundings, to give a better understanding of how to treat farm animals well.
