Counties delegates welcomed

Delegates and their spouses were welcomed with speeches and song to the fifty-ninth annual New Zealand Counties’ Association conference at the Christchurch Town Hall last evening. Prominent on the list of guest speakers was the Minister of Local Government, Mr Highet, who reminded the 400 delegates that it was the last time he would attend such a conference before retiring from politics. Welcoming speeches by Mr Highet and other countydignitaries were followed by items by the Christchurch Harmonic Society, and the pianist, Michael Lawrence. The opening ceremony ended with drinks and supper.

The delegates include elected councillors and permanent staff of the 102 county councils in New Zealand.

They will discuss a variety of remits over the next two days, on subjects ranging from road construction to Stewart Island’s electricity supply.
