More people killed themselves. and more were divorced in Japan last year than ever before, says the Health and Welfare Ministry.

Statistics released by the Ministry showed that 24,970 people committed suicide in 1983, 4302 more than in 1982, and well above the previous record of 23,641 in 1958. The 1983 figure was the highest since statistics were first complied in 1899, officials said. More than two-thirds of the suicides were men, with a sharp rise in middle-aged suicides. The number of men in their 40s killing themselves rose a third on 1982 and the number in their 50s by nearly half. Officials cited a police survey showing that financial difficulties were one of the main motives for suicide. Broken marriages continued to rise with the number of divorces totalling 179,160 last year, up 15,180 from the previous record in 1982..
