Robbery of man’s winnings denied

An unemployed man who was alleged in the District Court yesterday to have been involved in robbing a man of his wallet, containing race win takings, was committed for trial on a charge of aggravated rob-

bery. The defendant, Clinton Joseph Tonihi, aged 21, faced a joint charge that, with another man, he robbed Phillip Graham Robinson, a welder, of $4OO in a toilet at the Zetland Hotel on the evening of February 27. After hearing depositions of evidence of prosecution witnesses, Messrs J. B. Anderson and J. W. Taylor, Justices of the Peace, held there was sufficient evidence to commit the defendant for trial. They remanded him on bail pending a date for trial in the High Court. Counsel (Mr P. J. McMenamin), reserved his defence. Sergeant G. C. Jones prosecuted. Prosecution evidence was given that the complainant had gone to the Zetland Hotel at 6 p.m. on February 27, after having collected $464 from a T.A.B. from a doubles win at a race meeting in Wellington. He saw Tonihi and another person in the public bar. The other person spoke to him. Later, they went outside and Mr Robinson went to a toilet. He was about to leave when Tonihi struck him twice in the head. The other man began jabbing and slapping him, and Tonihi belted him round as well. They knocked him off his feet.
