Binding should get his reward at Te Aroha

Special correspondent Auckland Freshened by a let-up from racing, Binding promises another good performance in the first leg of the T.A.B. double and second leg of the treble at Te Aroha today. At his best, and with a bit more luck than he had in his last couple of attempts. Binding would probably win the Swney Memorial, a class-three 2200 metres. He was successful three starts back, in a middledistance at Ellerslie, fortuitously perhaps, but then suffered a couple of misfortunes. The first was to run up against one as good as Middle Ridge, at Te Rapa, then to be badly checked before coming in third behind Tom’s Dice and Harpoon at Avondale. The Avondale race, on May 18, was Binding’s most recent so he has been given a worth-while spell. Reigning Beauty, trying for her second win on end — she was successful last time over 2150 m at Te Rapa on June 6 — Cattleman and Ran Past promise to be Binding’s hardest opponents. Tattinger, a two-year-old stablemate of Binding, in Ray Verner’s team, seems a very likely winner in the first leg of the T.A.B. treble, the Second Maiden Improvers’, a 1200 m for two-year-olds, and Trioak is, perhaps, an even better prospect in the third leg, the South Auckland Racing Club Handicap. A black colt, by Pevero from Penny A Thought, Tattinger has the looks to go with his good breeding and he showed plenty of promise when fifth in his only race so far, at Avondale on May 18. Trioak, hardly even out of the money this season, has come back to racing after an enforced spell seemingly as good as ever, with a second placing, at Avondale, then a win at Ellerslie in just two starts. He is the top-weight this time, with 58kg, but the amount is expected to be reduced by a 2.5 kg allowance through his being ridden by the apprentice, Murray Henderson, a Te Awamutu lad in the employ of Graeme Sanders.
