Talks on coal stall
From
BRUCE ROSCOE
in Tokyo
Coal export talks with Japan have again stalled over disagreement on prices but shipments are proceeding under a provisional price of SUSSS a tonne. The buyers, Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, Ltd, and Mutsui Mining Com-
pany have linked the New Zealand price to Australian coking coal prices and are declining to close a new contract for fiscal 1984 Buller coal until Australia shippers agree to price cuts. Japanese coal-industry sources disclosed that the
buyers had agreed to peg this year’s volume at the 1983 level of 200.000 tonnes of Buller coal, with a buyer’s option for 40,000 tonnes more. The 1983 price of SUSSS a tonne would be applied provisionally until a new agreement was reached.
