New firearms regulations

Sir, — Our laws and our police are sometimes criticised. This association, having worked closely with the police on the new arms laws, would like to congratulate them and the Parliamentarians on the enlightened legislation being introduced to the public as “Project Foresight.” It treats the law-abiding citizen with respect, but is rightly very tough on criminals. Headed by Inspector A. G. McCallum of national headquarters, the police adopted a democratic approach by working with responsible bodies closely involved in the firearms industry, and also with sporting shooting bodies who, through their experience, had much to offer on firearm safety, security and shooting etiquette. As a result of this excellent liaison, there has grown an understanding and spirit of cooperation which will benefit the sporting shooter and law-abiding citizen. The removal of unnecessary “red tape” also benefits the taxpayer and enables the police to concentrate on other work. “Project

Foresight” does indeed show considerable foresight. — Yours, etc., lAN J. BARROW, Convener Firearms Committee, New Zealand Sports Goods Industries Assn. June 8, 1984.
