Tour successful—captain
NZPA-PA London The England rugby team returned home yesterday after its controversial tour of South Africa. In stark contrast to its departure, when dozens of antiapartheid demonstrators staged a noisy sit-down protest, there were just tearful hugs from wives and children as the players arrived at Heathrow Airport. The team captain, John Scott, said: “As far as I am concerned it was a totally successful tour. Everyone there couldn't have been more friendly. "Their rugby was of an extremely high standard and
we had some very tough games — but that was what we went there for.” He said he had no regrets about the tour. “I am just interested in rugby. I leave politics up to other people,” and added that he did not expect any recriminations after the tour, which brought condemnation from manyleading figures in Britain. The tour team was crushed in both tests against South Africa, but won four games and drew another, and Scott denied it had been a disaster from a rugby point of view. "When we left we weren’t expected to win any games — so perhaps we didn't do too badly," he said.
