League coach annoyed

NZPA-AAP Bundaberg The Great Britain coach, Frank Myler, was in a fighting mood after the tourists’ unconvincing 28-18 win in their opening Queensland rugby league match against Wide Bay at Bundaberg yesterday. The referee, Mick Hourigan, frustrated Britain with a lopsided 22-7 penalty hiding which angered Mr Myler. “If referees aren’t going to let our players play football then what’s the use of coming up here,” an annoyed Mr Myler said in the dressing room. “Today’s game was absolutely worthless as far as preparing for the second test and what’s more we’ve lost money into the bargain.” He

was referring to the paltry attendance figure of 2200 for the game. Mr Hourigan penalised Great Britain three times in the first two minutes, and by half-time had hammered the tourists 14-2 when Britain led, 18-12. He also created a furore when he took the field in almost identical colours to the Wide Bay team and was forced to change into a neutral blue jumper 14 minutes into the match. Scorers:— Great Britain 28 (Ellery Hanley, John Basnett, Kevin Beadmore, Wayne Proctor, Mick Worrall. tries, Joe Lydon 4 goals) beat Wide Bay 18 (Paul Gorman, Ron Slater, Ray Ovens tries, Gary Birmingham 2, Les Kiss goals).
