The 3ZM Canterbury men's Countrywide basketball league team has had Hamilton’s protest over its 98-92 win at Cowles Stadium on Saturday dismissed by the league commissioner. Mr Barry Wilson, of Wellington. However, another protects over DB Auckland playing an unregistered player in its match against Ponsonby on May 31, which DB won, 90-76, has been upheld. DB, which at present leads the league, has been fined $5OO but allowed to retain its competition points. Hamilton had protested over the final score on the official sheet, 100-90, but this was later readjusted to 98-92. Hamilton also asserted that Hamilton’s Zack Jones was penalised five fouls, which ruled him out of the game, instead of four fouls seven minutes from the finish.
"If fouls were wrongly attributed during the match inquiries should have been made immediately, not left until 10 or 15 minutes later when it cannot be conclusively proved what happened, ” said Mr Wilson last evening. In DB's case it was an administrative error, not a breach of the playing side of the sport, he said. The club was slightly confused at the start of the season in the rostering of players for the first and second divisions and the player at the centre of the controversy was placed on the team sheet for the Ponsonby game without being registered. “As it turned out, he was on the bench and did not play,” said Mr Wilson. “Under these circumstances we felt it better to fine the club rather than penalise the players who were not at fault.”
