Browne stable earned $38,275
Special correspondent Auckland Civil Rights, with his win in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase on Saturday, brought the stake earnings gathered by Ken and Ann
Browne during the Great Northern meeting to $38,275. The Cambridge couple collected no fewer than six wins and five placings with their team of mainly jumpers, a remarkable owner-trainer achievement. With a third placing in the Great Northern, Civil Rights had already earned $7500 at the meeting before he stepped out to pick up a further $BBOO on Saturday. Civil Rights battled hard against Hunterville and Dulico for his Great Northern third and he thoroughly deserved the win. Beginning the slope to the run home he gave the pacemaker, Dulico, three or four lengths but he had picked up the ground by the time, they were on the flat again. Once over the last jump Dulico dropped back, allowing Resolution and Hunterville to take the second and third placings. Civil Rights gave a good display, sometimes quite spectacular, which is more than could be said for Hunterville. Once again Hunterville made a botch of the water jump, this time the second jump on the 4900 m course and was often slow getting away from the other fences. The rider, Dennis Gray, made these points when questioned before the judicial committee on his handling of the horse. He said also that Hunterville had not responded towards the finish as well as anticipated.
