Young table tennis pair shine
Two high school students, Karl Entwistle (Avonside III) and Mark Lockhart (Riccarton III), both recorded three singles wins to take their respective teams to narrow 7-5 victories in the sixth round of A grade inter-club table tennis last week. Entwistle, a member of the New Zealand under-15 team which competed in Australia during the May holidays, was in good form to down Graham Lamb, Tony Sargent and John Armstrong (Riccarton II), while Mark Lockhart can be particularly pleased with his hard-earned win over the durable veteran, Dennis Kalin, of Dallington. Avonside I retained its unbeaten record with a comfortable 8-4 win over Riccarton I. John Armstrong’s 100 per cent singles success rate this season came to an end when he went down to the Canterbury and South Island champion, Maurice Burrowes. However, the agile veteran showed that he still retains the ability to test
some of the top players in the province with wins over the national women’s representative, Jan Morris, and Michael Burrowes.
