Baby-death links suspected
A woman charged with the murder of another woman’s baby in Christchurch two weeks ago is the subject of a national police investigation into incidents relating to other children. The woman, aged 28, accused of murdering Michael Clark Tinnion on May 28, was remanded in custody to Sunnyside Hospital for a psychiatric assessment after appearing in the District Court on Saturday Inquiries being made in
Hawke’s Bay, Auckland and a South Canterbury town could lead to further charges being laid against her, said Detective Inspector Brian Williams in Christchurch. “There are a small number of children involved. We don’t want to leave the impression that there are a lot of babies dead," he said. The accused is believed to have lived in Hawke’s Bay and a South Canterbury
town before moving to Christchurch 18 months ago. Mr Williams said inquiries had been made in those areas, and inquiries were now being made in Auckland. He was unable to say when further charges, if any, would be laid. “We have to assemble papers from other districts
and have a conference where we would look at the circumstances and decide the appropriate charges, if any, to prefer,” he said. The woman was granted interim suppression of name at the court hearing on Saturday. She will appear again on June 25.
