Josephine Bret looks sound Ashburton chance

Josephine Bret, a decisive winner in the New Zealand Oaks on May 9 at her latest start, should' give Southland stables their second major success at the Ashburton Trotting Club's winter meeting today. Malez won the Sapling Stakes for the province on Saturday Josephine Bret will share the back mark of 30m in the Queen's Birthday Stakes, a race which will be penaltyfree as far as she'is concerned. Josephine Bret is among the more talented fillies of the season and she will give a start to all but Freightman among her rivals today. Most of the others have shown little form of note in top classic company and the southern filly should be more than a match for them. Freightman, too. will be in great demand after his impressive win over a field of C 4 and C 5 pacers in smart time at Addington Raceway on May 25. The Lordship colt might not be such a smart beginner as Josphine Bret, but he is a grand stayer and is certain to be right in the thick of the finish. Quarter Shares failed to return a dividend in a Cl race on Saturday, but his performance to finish less than a length from Angel Lea was a minor feature of the day’s racing. He looks to be well above average in ability and should go well. Patrick O'Reilly, jun.. will have two worth-while runners in Stardell Lad and Lew Foy, while there will be support for Toss Up, runner-up to Lucy Lumber at Alexandra Park on May 19 last time out. Jet’s Sister will have to show very little improvement on her second to her stablemate, Bahrein, in the Nicoll Handicap on Saturday to come out on top in the Burkes Caterers Handicap, which will be run over an extra 800 m. Jet’s Sister has not long resumed racing after a let-up and she should still be at the improving stage. Quick George missed the start on Saturday, but before that he had won at Oamaru and Timaru. He has more ability than most in the race and should be given another chance. Bahrein did exceptionally well to win the Nicoll Handicap as he raced in the open throughout and won convincingly. He has been penalised 10m for that win. but that should not be sufficient to keep him out of the money. Skipem, Formal Fella. Castle Del and Rapid Fella appeal most of the others, while the third of Reggae on Saturday entitles her to consideration as an upset chance especially as it is unlikely the race will prove to be much of a test of stamina.
