Boxing titles to Woolston

Two Woolston Workingmen’s Club boxers, Dean Calvert and Colin Adamson, won trophies and junior titles at the South Island Golden Gloves amateur tournament in Tapanui at the week-end. Calvert was chosen as the most scientific junior, and Adamson as the most outstanding boxer. Results of finals involving competitors from Canterbury were: Junior —39 kg: Calvert beat Douglas Fryer (Green Island), points. 45kg: Adamson beat Steven Boucher (Bond’s Dunedin), r.s.c. 2.41 kg: Carl Blyth (Clearwater’s) beat Alan Brunton (Tapanui), r.s.c. 1. 36kg: Bevan McCully (Temuka) beat Shane Finlayson (Luxon’s), points. Welterweight: Les Bower (Colvin’s) beat Nigel Ennis (Temuka), points. Light welterweight: Blair Broad (Tapanui) beat Greg Godking (Timaru), majority points. Senior — middleweight: Nicky McKenzie (Tuatapere) beat Peter Tootoo (Woolston), points. Three other Woolston competitors, Alex Faimalo (intermediate middleweight), Esene Faimalo (intermediate heavyweight) and Henry Schuster (senior heavyweight), were unopposed in their divisions. The other special awards went to Johnny Peterson (Peterson’s most scientific senior), Monty Sewpersad (Nightcaps, most scientific intermediate), Wayne Barber (Oamaru, best boxer-fighter).
