Holiday toll well up on last year
PA Wellington The holiday week-end road toll stood at eight last evening, compared with one fatality at the same time on Queen's Birthday week-end last year. Three Northland persons died on Friday evening in a three-car collision on State highway 1. south of Whangarei. they were Gary John Wakelin, aged 26. of Whangarei; Samuel Patrick Clarke, aged 23, of Kaitaia: and Tambra Joan Matravers, aged 16. of Kaitaia. An Invercargill woman also died on Friday evening in an accident at Logan Point, near Dunedin. She was Barbara June Agnew, aged 23.
Three others were taken to hospital. A motor-cyclist died on Saturday afternoon on the Ida Valley Road, in Central Otago, after he failed to take a corner. He was David James Shefford, aged 31. of Queenstown. A Marton man died when his car went over a bank at Tokorangi. near Marton, yesterday morning. He was Neal Ned Tumau Kora, aged 21. known by the surname. Snowden. Another man died yesterday morning at Piarere. near Matamata. in a headon collision. He was Stanley Eric Cleaver, aged 54, of Putaruru. A pedestrian died when he was hit by a van in Upper Hutt yesterday afternoon.
