Belfast increases lead
Belfast increased its lead in “The Press” Centennial Cup competition for the best and fairest senior rugby team in ninth-round matches on Saturday. With a score of 11 out of 12 for sportsmanship, and a further six out of eight for constructiveness, Belfast took its running aggregate to 145, five clear of the nearest challenger, Burnside. Marist gained the highest marks of the day, 19, to improve its standing from ninth to equal fourth, with Christchurch and Linwood. Marist was awarded maximum points for sportsmanship, and dropped only one point in the other section. Points awarded on Saturday
were:— Marist, sportsmanship 12. constructiveness 7, total 19; Belfast, 11, 6. 17; Hornby, 10, 7, 17; Lincoln College, 9. 7, 16; Christchurch, 9,7, 16; High School Old Boys, 10, 6. 16; Burnside, 8,7, 15; Suburbs, 9,6, 15; University, 9,6, 15; Meri-vale-Papanui, 10, 5, 15; Lyttelton. 8,6, 14; Sydenham. 7,6, 13; Linwood, 8,5, 13; Albion, 7,5, 12; New Brighton, 5,6, 11; Shirley, 7,4, 11. Total points are:— Belfast 145, Burnside 140, Lincoln College 138, Marist, Christchurch and Linwood 137, Suburbs 136, Shirley and Old Boys 135, Sydenham and University 126, New Brighton and Merivale-Papanui 125, Albion 122, Lyttelton and Hornby 119.
