Dole better than farm jobs?

PA Rotorua School-leavers were finding the dole more attractive than working on the land. Rotorua farmers have suggested. Some farmers were unable to take on cadets because none were available, a field officer, Mr D. E. Moselen, told the annual conference of the RotoruaTaupo province of Federated Farmers. Mr Moselen said he was at a loss to explain why noone was waiting for a farm job. He said it was a complete turnaround. Farmers had applied to the Labour Department and advertised without success,

he said. The conference was told the problem was also experienced in Taranaki, Auckland, and Waikato, where 40 to 50 jobs were unfilled. Farmers decided the main reason was because the dole was more attractive than the farm cadet scheme, but negative publicity about farming and the reluctance of school-leavers to tie themselves up for three years also contributed to the problem. Delegates agreed to ask the department to survey the unemployed to discover why they would not accept farm jobs.
