Liquor ‘destroyed’
Liquor valued at £SI4 million ($l7 million) has been destroyed at Port Sudan on the Red Sea on the orders of the Sudanese President, Field Marshal Jaafar Nemery. TTie Sudan News Agency (Suna) said that the beverages had arrived at the port after Field Marshal Nemerv’s declaration of Islamic law in Sudan in September, and had belonged to foreign embassies. State-owned duty-free shops, and some companies and individuals. The Islamic law forbids the drinking, transport and dispensing of alcoholic drinks. Suna said that the destruction had been supervised by the deputy governor of Sudan’s Eastern Region, and had been witnessed by cheering crowds who chanted slogans supporting Field Marshal Nemery and his Islamic methods. — Khartoum.
