Better coal system

Proposals by the Railways Corporation and the Lyttelton Harbour Board for an improved transport system to handle Buller coal exports will cost about $lO million. The Lyttelton Harbour Board estimated it would cost about $3 million to improve facilities, while the purchase of 70 new coal waggons would add another $7 million to the bill, said the Railways district traffic manager, Mr Bob Taylor, yesterday.

A further $3 million would be needed in the long term for new track work but Mr Taylor said this was just part of the Railways budget for improving the West Coast lines. Mr Taylor said at yesterday’s joint meeting with the Lyttelton Harbour Board that the proposal would not progress until it had the full backing of the Government. It is believed that if the new proposal goes ahead, the price of export coal will drop about 25 per cent.
