Arab State joins boycott
NZPA-Reuter Aden South Yemen became the first Arab State to boycott the Los Angeles Olympic Games when it announced yesterday it was joining the Soviet Union and 10 of its allies who had already opted to stay out. The South Yemeni Olympic Committee said in a statement that it was boycotting the Games because of "Olympic violations by the American side and the wild hostility campaign against Soviet athletes and those of Socialist States and some developing nations.” South Yemen, the only Marxist-ruled Arab State, has close political and military ties with the Soviet Union. The South Yemeni committee also said it was staying out because of what it termed the commercialisation of the Games and safety hazards to athletes. The Aden Government planned to send 10 to 15 athletes to Los Angeles to compete in track and weightlifting events.
