Responses to rape

Sir, — Identifying the causes of rape no more signifies approval than identifying the causes of nuclear war singifies that it too is desirable. The knowledge that relations between the sexes are based on deep-seated biological urges is largely ignored by theoretical idealists and university-based logicians. Rape should and can be restrained; but trying to do this in a permissive atmosphere or one pervaded, by inter-sex antagonism is like mixing lions and lambs — ideally possible sometimes perhaps, but likely to present problems in the meantime. — Yours, etc VERNON WILKINSON.
