Parliamentarians
Sir, — I commend the call by the leader of the New Zealand Party, Mr Bob Jones, for more willingness by politicians to give “opposition” members of Parliament credit for good ideas. The destructive course adopted by many members now is to rubbish any idea, regardless of its merit, originating from a member of another party. This practice is a malaise of party politics, and, in spite of his good intentions, Mr Jones is unlikely to eradicate it while party structures remain. Only when our politicians are made to put electorate loyalty before blind party allegiance will truly constructive debate be seen in Parliament. — Yours, etc., R. P. RITCHIE. May 24, 1984.
