Supermarkets to cushion ‘thaw’
PA Auckland Three supermarket chains indicated yesterday that they would cushion price rises when their self-im-posed extention of the price freeze ends next month. Woolworths supermarkets, New World, and Foodtown promised to hold prices for three months after the Government price freeze ended late in Febru-
ary. New World would begin a "thaw” from June 4, said the manager of the supermarket division, Mr Walter Sullivan. He believed there would be intense competition between supermarket chains
“to ensure that no-one goes wild with increases.” The assistant general manager of marketing for Woolworths supermarkets, Mr Brian Isherwood, said: “We will watch the market very closely. When our competitors move their prices, we will move ours.” The freeze at Foodtown supermarkets will lift in June also. The joint managing director, Mr Graeme Kelly, said the supermarket was not prepared to “deal its hand before the event.” Competitors’ moves on prices would in part dictate the supermarket’s response, he said.
