Flax swamp at risk?

Christchurch’s last remaining protected swamp area may be at risk, according to the New Brighton Community Committee. The flax swamp covers about 2.7 hectares of Cockayne Reserve in New Brighton Road. Drainage development round the swamp seems to be drying out the swamp, said the secretary of the New Brighton Community Committee, Mrs Carole Evans.

A stopbank, kerbing and channelling being installed nearby in New Brighton Road by the City Council and the Drainage Board seemed to be stopping natural water flowing into the swamp, she said.

It was the only area of flax in a natural state preserved in Christchurch and it was worth maintaining. The City Councill and other bodies developing the area needed to be aware of the significance.

Some action was needed to preserve the swamp, but while the community committee could see a problem it did not know how to solve it.

The committee has invited a Lincoln College botanist, Dr Brian Molloy, to speak about the swamp and its future at its general meeting on May 30. Any action on the matter would depend on that meeting, Mrs Evans said.
